Description

Pallagrello Nero VITAE

The name Pallagrello has an uncertain origin. The most accredited version is probably the one relating to the reduced size of grape bunches and its berries. In fact, grapes of this precious vine are small, perfectly spherical and from this shape was born the nickname “Pallarell” which from the local dialect means small ball. The other typical term to which the origin of the name is associated is “pagliarello”. This word indicates the straw trellis traditionally used to store grapes and leave them to dry. Although the definition of its name is uncertain, the history of this red wine is clear and centuries-old.
Pallagrello Nero was in fact one of the ten most valuable grape varieties during the second half of the 18th century. The only variety of Campania region (together with Pallagrello Bianco) worthy of appearing in Luigi Vanvitelli’s magnificent project: “Vigna del Ventaglio”, an extensive semi-circular vineyard whose ten rays that compose it each house precious vines. Cultivated behind the Royal Palace of Caserta for King Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies, following the epidemic of phylloxera (an insect that attacks the roots of the plant and causes serious damage in a short time with consequent death of vine), the crops of Pallagrello Nero, as well as those of Pallagrello Bianco, decreased considerably and the variety was thought to have died out. It was rediscovered in an abandoned vineyard in the early 1990s.

Features

This Italian red wine online contains all the tradition of its grape variety and adds a special personality. It contains the story of its origins and at the same time detaches itself from it. As per tradition, in fact, grapes are harvested strictly by hand. But the first difference compared to tradition is the soil in which the roots of the plant sink: a partially siliceous soil that outlines the characteristics of the grape. After the harvest, the maturation period is partly in steel and wood for 18 months. In particular in oak tonneaux and a furhter little part in amphora. The intensity and complexity of this wine are tangible and can be perceived from its bright ruby red color. On the nose there are red fruits, forest spices, citrus notes and spicy aromas. The taste is deep, tannic. It goes perfectly with delicious red meats, braised meats, cheeses or ham and salami.
The Pallagrello Nero VITAE  stands out for its unrivaled elegance that will surprise you.
